The “Altered Nature” series focuses on the idea of collision, overlaying and underlaying manufactured fragments with nostalgic scenes. I am a painter who has always used the camera as my sketchbook. In this series, “Altered Nature’, I digitally transfer photos on to the traditional artist substrate, the canvas. The photo is the starting point for my painting. Often I see an alternative meaning in the photo which becomes the impetus for the painted image that I choose.
The close-up view of graffiti and scarred concrete becomes a field of dry grass for the painted deer to graze on. Or the green dumpster splattered with paint becomes water and landscape for the painted canoeist to paddle through.
These works point to the precarious relationship between humans and our environment and how we develop, and alter nature.
