When it comes to art, they say one’s surroundings inspire one’s work.

With that in mind, you can imagine what kind of pieces can come from spending a few days basking at the base of a few mountains or living lakeside. It’s that beauty that instructor Lori Goldberg is hoping to teach people to channel later this summer as part of the Whistler Arts Council’s (WAC) Art Workshops on The Lake series.

A regular instructor at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Goldberg has been participating in the WAC’s annual workshops series for three years now, teaching acrylic painting for beginners.

Situated at the Alta Lake Station House, Goldberg’s workshop is just one of many being offered this summer by the WAC in a variety of media.

And while she may spend much of her time teaching at Emily Carr, Goldberg said that it’s a completely different experience when she teaches up in Whistler.

“It’s incredibly wonderful, you couldn’t ask for a better set up,” she said. “You’ve got an intimate group, an incredible space right on the water and people who are hard-working and committed and want to try things out.”

Different from her normal teaching routine, Goldberg said that because students are actually staying at the station house, it allows for pure dedication to learning and creating.

“You’re right there, you have no distractions and you’re focused,” said Goldberg. “The students also have each other to help support one another.”

As for the teaching environment, Goldberg said she welcomes the opportunity to teach people in such an intensive environment.

“It challenges me on a new level, which I particularly enjoy,” said Goldberg, noting that her introductory course is great for people who have never really painted before in their lives, as well as those who have already dabbled.

“People that are a clean slate, they’re easier to teach than people who have knowledge from other instructors because they’re already slanted in one direction,” said said.

“I think the people that are more challenging to teach are those who already have had some sort of experience with paint, but the only reason they’re there is to open up and learn new things, so they’re just as great to have in the group.”

As for her own artistic background, Goldberg said that she’s been involved with the arts since she was young and hasn’t looked back since.

“It just came so natural and easy for me as opposed to reading and writing in school,” recalled Goldberg. “I’ve always been interested in visuals and it was something I was good at.”

Having focused on her art from an early age, Goldberg went on to win various awards for her work and after attending Langara College, she headed out east to further pursue art.

“Then it was about getting my work out there and getting people interested in my work in galleries,” she said. “And eventually, I began teaching as well.”

And it was the transition to teaching that Goldberg found to be the perfect balance for her life.

“The teaching, I’ve always loved to do that as well because I love people,” she explained. “Studio practice is a very lone experience, so it balances out my needs and it gives me great satisfaction knowing I’m doing something worthy on this planet while I’m here.”

Goldberg’s introduction to acrylics workshop is just one of many workshops being offered this summer by the WAC as part of their Artists Workshops on the Lake series. The workshops run from now until August and feature everything from photography and painting to sculptures.

“People who have never really tried to paint before, this is really a great one for them,” said Goldberg. “I’m used to helping people who say that they’ve never been able to paint and I find a way for them.”

Do you want to participate in my recent project?

I am presently working on a body of work that I am calling

TRAVELOGUE- a continual journey.

You can see some of my recent work online under travelogue.

Traveling is a process that challenges my creative sensibilities and develops awareness and connections to the world around me. I am inspired by the happenstance, interactions and unexpected experiences that occurs when I leave behind the mundane day to day.

I am cognitive of how my role as the artist changes while on the road. I am a voyeur and at times, the participant. Once embarked on my journey, I am open to the multi-sensory exchanges with strangers, friends and places. I record my experiences through drawing, photography, writing and memory

I am creating a collection of paintings that is inspired by travel, with a focus on collaborations derived from creative engagement with people I meet and stay with.   

What will the creative exchange be?

Any creative endeavor is possible, from art lessons to site specific work. The more inventive the more interesting the exchange becomes.

I will document and record my experiences through film, photography , writing, drawing.   Back in the studio, I will unpack these snapshots and begin constructing these narratives onto the canvas. By layering, connecting juxtaposing images and interfacing with memories of ’felt’ experiences of sounds, smells and touch; , I will create poetic spaces for which the viewer can enter.

I am presently looking for people who would be interested in participating and supporting me in this painting project. I think it would be a wonderful exchange and lots of fun! If you are interested, I will give you more details once I hear from you .

New York , Stills and Teaching

walking the streets of NYC

I love NYC. It is a candy store for artists. The visual excitement and cultural experiences bombard all my senses. It is all encompasing and invigorating. Inspired and happily exhausted I return to Vancouver pulsating with new energy. Inhaling a deep breathe of fresh wet air I begin to melt back into the Vancouver groove but with a renewed sense of anything is possible and a work ethic that goes with it.

Speaking of work. In the past 2 weeks I cranked out 10 still life paintings for my gallery in Seattle. My Stills are my signature work that I started painting ten years ago when I was raising my children on my own and my world was my home. These paintings are about the home and for the home.

Painting my stills is contemplative and skill building. They inspire my poetic narrative paintings.

Talking about BALANCE. Teaching is a passion of mine. I want to inspire others and share my knowledge and spread the love of painting.

Welcome to my NEW AMAZING WEBSITE!

I encourage you to enter my website and get engaged.

As much as I liked my last website, it had limitations. Now I can upload information myself which will make it an interactive, user-friendly site. YEAH!

Believe it or not, but this has been a project that lasted me a soul-searching year! The designing of the website became a metaphor for redesigning and finding clarity in my art and my life.

I have come to appreciate and celebrate all that I have done and continue to do so. I am a multi-dimensional person who is as diverse in my art as I am in my teaching. I am a change-maker, a motivator and inspirer; a creator of small ripples of change in people’s lives. What an amazing journey so far!

My website acts as a window where you can see a selection of my life’s work , latest paintings, and be informed about my projects, exhibitions and painting courses. Under News, I will use writing, visuals and videos as a way to bring to you insightful thoughts and views on my art work and demos on techniques and methods in drawing and painting. I am excited about the new possibilities!
